Orlando Bloom is an acclaimed, award winning British actor. He made his breakthrough playing Legolas in The Lord of the Rings films, and later reprised the role in The Hobbit trilogy. He gained further recognition for The Pirates of the Caribbean series, in which he played Will Turner. He has subsequently starred in a number of Hollywood films, including Troy and Kingdom of Heaven. Currently, he is starring in Amazon Prime Video series Carnival Row. Over the course of his illustrious career, Bloom has received several accolades, including a coveted Screen Actors Guild Award.
Despite his success, it hasn’t always been plain sailing for Bloom. As a child, he struggled with his dyslexia. He found school difficult, and would often get frustrated with himself. His solace was performing, and he knew from an early age that he wanted to be an actor. He has spoken frequently on the subject of dyslexia, and stresses how important it was for him to have a creative outlet growing up. Bloom was once again faced with adversity when, at twenty-one, he fell from a roof and broke his back. For four days he was paralyzed. He was lucky enough to make a quick recovery, but he credits the injury with informing his worldview and making him continually grateful.
Alongside his successful acting career, Bloom is a keen activist and humanitarian. Since the early 2000s he has been a part of Global Green, an NGO that fosters a shift towards a sustainable future. He is also an ambassador for UNICEF and has supported The Children’s Defense Fund. In 2015, Bloom received a BAFTA LA Britannia Humanitarian Award.
