Börkur started his professional career in photography in Iceland but quickly branched into directing. In 2004 he was signed to the renowned UK music video production company Oil Factory (later to become Factory Films) where he directed commercials for Nike, Honda and The Guardian along with music videos for the likes of Richard Ashcroft and Supergrass. His award winning short psychological thriller COME TO HARM (2011) marked Börkur’s move into long form drama.
Known for a striking and rigorous visual aesthetic, Börkur went on to be a major creative force on the international and critical hit Icelandic series TRAPPED (acquired by Amazon, and BBC4 in the UK) directing the opening titles and some of the standout episodes of season 1. He was invited back to direct a majority of season 2 and last year he wrote and directed his debut feature VULTURES in Iceland.
In the UK he cut his teeth first on ENDEAVOUR for ITV and most recently directed the first 3 episodes of BAPTISTE for BBC1 starring Tcheky Karyo, Tom Hollander and Jessica Raine which has been recommissioned for season 2.
He is represented by Roxana Adle at Independent Talent Group.
