Mediae specialises in producing ‘edutainment’ programming for the East African message – mass appeal programming with an underlying development message. During this time, I was a consultant producer working across all their productions. Roles undertaken included:

KNOW ZONE STANDARD 2 (Consultant Producer)
• Overseeing production on 52 x 1 hour magazine show aimed at 8 year olds, focused on numeracy, literacy and social skills; broadcasting from January 2014
• Responsible for all content – developed age appropriate material including new drama series (The Playhouse)
• Worked with Steering Group made of up industry professionals
• Oversaw recruitment of UK consultants (studio director and local production team)
• Responsibility for all-post-production
• Management of budget
• Managed relationship with commissioning organisation (DFID)

KNOW ZONE RWANDA (Consultant)
• Worked to secure funding for a 13 part series in Kigali from Challenge Fund
• Developed show format and project budget
• Recruited UK project manager

MAKUTANO JUNCTION Series 12 and 13 (Consultant Producer)
• Working with eight writers, storylined and script edited 26 x 30 minute episodes
• Liaised with sponsors over development messages
• Supervised and trained Kenyan script editor
• Responsible for production scheduling and planning
• Oversaw filming (including casting and crew hire); developed internship scheme
• Supervised post-production process
• Developed and supervised quantitative and qualitative studio work
• Full budget management of the series

SHAMBA SHAPE-UP Series 1-3 (Production Associate)
• Oversaw production logistics of Kenya’s first farm makeover show (including recruitment of UK director)
• Responsible for specific episode post-production, including scripting and supervising voiceovers
• Managed relationships with commercial sponsors
Shamba Shape-up Series 1 was recognised for helping Kenya towards achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals in April 2013

KNOW ZONE STANDARD 6 (Executive Producer)
• Oversaw production of 52 x 1 hour episodes, broadcasting from January 2012
• Responsible for all scripted content studio; drama; animation; Out There. Developed new formats including studio games
• Oversaw recruitment of UK consultants (studio director and local production team)
• Responsibility for all-post-production
• Management of budget
• Managed relationship with commissioning organisation (DFID)

Project details:
Employed on a short-term basis to assist the story team with the development of story documents for Channel 4’s most popular drama series

Following a story conference with the writing team, ideas were transformed into gripping storylines that met both production requirements and editorial needs

Initially hired to help during a transition period, I subsequently remained in Liverpool before returning to London due to other employment obligations

Hired crew and supervised casting

Supervised set construction (relocating set) – involving budget management and employing in excess of 60 construction workers. Project was achieved in under four weeks

Developed major commercial sponsorship deal (Safaricom)

Secured grant from a government department for additional episodes (ICT Board)

Oversaw post-production process

Managed relationships with content sponsors (Twaweza, Google and British High Commission)

MAKUTANO JUNCTION was recognised as Best Serial Drama at the Global Media Awards (run by the Population Institute in the US). This was based on an application I submitted and an episode that I script edited/storylined

MAKUTANO JUNCTION was nominated for best television show at the Africa Magic Television Awards (2013)

Co-wrote report on the use of mass media for development content on behalf of Mediae/DFID aimed at the international development community

JUNCTION JUNIORS (33 x 10 minutes series of dramas) forms part of KNOW ZONE – a magazine show for children. The show has close ties to the school curriculum, exploring a different topic each week

Script produced the remaining 16 episodes of Junction Juniors (working remotely from London), which involved establishing a script delivery timetable and ensuring that the scripts meet pre-determined criteria – educational content, buzzwords, production restrictions etc. The episodes combined live action with animation inserts

Produced two controller sessions for the 2008 television festival – ITV2 and Five

Undertook extensive research and compiled two VTs for each session (a review of the year and focus group highlights)

Liaised with channel controllers, session chairs and the executive producers

Designed session outline, wrote publicity blurbs and generated pertinent questions for each session chair

Worked with 9 Kenyan writers, storylining the series and then script editing all episodes

Liaised heavily with the production team and the show’s sponsor organisations over editorial content
