Alex Medland is an award-winning playwright from Aotearoa/New Zealand.
Her play We’re Gonna Kill Billy won the 2025 Adam New Zealand Play Award for Best Play, Best Play by a Māori Playwright and Best Play by a Woman. She is currently the youngest recipient of the Adam Award in its 18 year history. We’re Gonna Kill Billy was also shortlisted for The 2025 Women’s Prize for Playwriting and The 2025 Alpine Prize, and long-listed for The 2025 Bruntwood Prize. We’re Gonna Kill Billy was performed as a rehearsed reading as part of The Royal Court Theatre’s Open Submission Festival in April 2026.
Alex’s first play Becoming Jeff Bezos won Playmarket New Zealand’s 2024 b425 Award and was performed as rehearsed readings as part of He Kākano at Te Ahurei Toi o Tāmaki Auckland Arts Festival 2026. Her other work has been the recipient of the AIR Litteratur Västra Götaland residency (King of the Scouts, 2025).
