Brian Welsh is an award-winning British film director and writer whose work spans feature film and prestige television.
He is currently in the later stages of post-production on ‘The Return of Stanley Atwell’, a £12 million mystery thriller he wrote and directed, starring Nicholas Galitzine, Ella Purnell, and Damian Lewis. The film marks Brian’s second collaboration with Oscar-winning producer-director Steven Soderbergh (‘Ocean’s Eleven’, ‘Sex, Lies, and Videotape’, ‘Erin Brockovich’, ‘Traffic’), and his second with Oscar-nominated, BAFTA-winning producer Liza Marshall (Hera pictures- ‘Hamnet’). Alongside his feature work, Brian holds a first-look television development deal with BBC Studios, partnering with talent to create and nurture cinematic television with global appeal.
Before Atwell, Brian was lead director and executive producer on ‘What It Feels Like for a Girl’, a bold coming-of-age limited series that earned numerous BAFTA nominations, including Best Limited Drama, and Royal Television Society nominations, including Best Director for Brian. The series was acquired by Amazon in the US.
His earlier feature ‘Beats’, an acclaimed crime comedy set against the Scottish rave scene, won Lorn Macdonald Best Actor at the Scottish BAFTAs and earned Brian a Best Director nomination. It also took craft prizes at the British Independent Film Awards and a Best Screenplay nomination at the Writers’ Guild Awards.
Brian is also known as the director of ‘The Entire History of You’, widely ranked among the finest Black Mirror episodes and regarded as a benchmark for the series that followed. As one of the show’s founding directors, he helped launch it at Channel 4, where its first season won the International Emmy for Best TV Movie/Mini-Series, before Netflix acquired the show and turned it into a global phenomenon.
