Lily Gwynne-Thomas

Writer/Director

Lily is a London-based writer/director whose work challenges rigid ideas of identity and social norms. Their films explore tender yet culturally absurd relationships, provoking transformation and blurring the boundary between self and other.

Originally studying Biological Sciences at UCL, Lily discovered filmmaking through a workshop at BFI Southbank. They went on to join the BFI Future Film community, where they developed their voice through mentorship while creating experimental shorts and music videos.

Their debut narrative short, X to X (2023), funded by BFI Network, stars Tanya Reynolds (Sex Education) as identical twins set against the backdrop of a purpose-built American dive bar. The film screened internationally at BIFA, BAFTA, and Oscar-qualifying festivals, receiving multiple awards.

Lily has since directed second unit on COBRA, starring Robert Carlyle, through a Sky TV shadowing scheme, and is a BAFTA Connect member.
