Mark Brozel

Director

Mark is currently shooting Youtube Red’s flagship Sci-fi show Origin. Before that he directed on the the epic TROY: FALL OF A CITY for BBC / Netflix and also the second season of HUMANS for Kudos/C4 & AMC.

Before that he directed Tony Jordan’s new flagship show for BBC1: DICKENSIAN.

He is attached to direct the feature QUICKSAND, starring Stellan Skarsgard and Emily Watson.

James McAvoy starred in Mark’s contemporary version of MACBETH – one of the four in the acclaimed Shakespeare adaptations for BBC Television. Set in an uber-smart restaurant. It aired late 2006. In a chorus of praise, US Vogue singled it out as a ‘masterpiece’.

He spent 8 weeks in the Sahara filming THE WALK before that – a single drama about a charity walk in the desert that goes badly wrong. Airing prime-time on ITV to very strong reviews, it starred Nicola Stephenson and Phil Glenister.

In 2003 he directed the multi award-winning HOLY CROSS – a landmark film for BBC 1 about the attack on Belfast school children in 2001. It featured Bronagh Gallagher and Zara Turner and went out to a glowing press.

Before HOLY CROSS Mark directed the drama A RAP AT THE DOOR – again for the BBC about Belfast’s ‘disappeared’, written by Pearse Elliot and starring Ciaran McMennamin.

He has directed and produced a number of highly acclaimed documentaries for BBC Television. He helped to establish BBC2’s Modern Times strand with STREETWISE – a wry celebration of the way London cabbies come into being; CHERYL’S TRIAL – the disturbing story of a modern day witchhunt; and CHEATING HEARTS – a portrait of an unscrupulous New Jersey private eye and his highly suspicious clients.

He directed three of the BBC 1 prime-time series CASUALTY 1909, starring Cherie Lunghi, Charity Wakefield & Sarah Smart – ‘period drama at its most compelling’ in the words of the Daily Mail.

His garlanded MANGE TOUT (1997) – a documentary fairytale about the vegetable’s journey from African fields to a Basingstoke dinner party – was selected by the Chicago Museum of Broadcasting as one of their ‘best documentaries of C20th.’

His first commercial, for Christian Aid, was banned from TV for being ‘politically controversial’, but aired in cinemas. He’s gone on to make over two dozen ads.

He’s just finished adapting the thriller LULLABY by Bernard Beckett ( publication May’ 15 ) into a single film.
