Meadhbh McHugh is an Irish writer based in New York.  Most recently Meadhbh adapted Louise O’Neill’s bestselling novel ASKING FOR IT for the stage in collaboration with director Annabelle Comyn. The play won the Audience Choice Award at the Irish Times Theatre Awards 2018 after playing to sold-out houses and critical acclaim at the Everyman Theatre in Cork and the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. It returns to the Everyman Theatre in Cork and the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin in September and October 2019 respectively. During its initial run, ASKING FOR IT attracted a whole new audience with 60% of bookers coming to the Everyman for the first time.

Meadhbh’s debut play, HELEN AND I, was produced in 2016 by Druid Theatre Company at the Mick Lally Theatre in Galway. The play was also performed as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival in 2016 at the Civic Theatre in Tallaght and was shortlisted for the Stewart Parker Trust Award in 2016 for best debut play. Meadhbh’s debut radio play, APRIL SHOWERS, won a PJ O’Connor Award for new writing and was broadcast on RTÉ Radio One in 2014. She holds a B.A. from Trinity College Dublin; a M.F.A in Playwriting from The Lir Academy, Dublin; and a M.Phil. in Theatre from Columbia University in New York, where she currently teaches writing. She was an Edward Albee Foundation fellow in Montauk, New York in 2017. Meadhbh has also written extensively for The Irish Times, including writing profiles of famed American artists such as Toni Morrison and Paul Auster.
