Emma Howlett is a theatre director, playwright, and screenwriter working across the UK and in Europe.
As Artistic Director of award-winning company TheatreGoose, she writes, directs, and produces an expanding repertoire of critically acclaimed work. Her hit debut play HER GREEN HELL (VAULT Festival, Summerhall, Theatre Royal Plymouth, Theatre Royal Bath) was long-listed for the BBC Popcorn New Writing Award and nominated for two OFFest Awards in 2023. Her second, SISTERS THREE (Summerhall) won a Lustrum Award in 2024. Her third, the sell-out hit, AETHER (Summerhall), saw Emma named one of the ‘Fringe Five’ most impactful artists at the Festival by The Stage in 2025. AETHER transfers to Jermyn Street Theatre in 2026.
As a playwright, her work was shortlisted for the Lyric Hammersmith’s Bill Cashmere One Act Play Award in 2025, and she will be a member of the Royal Court Writers’ Group in Autumn 2025.
As a director, she has staged large ensemble productions at theatres such as the Oxford Playhouse, and made her European debut in 2023 with a new production of George Brant’s GROUNDED at The Bridge Theatre, Brussels. She will join the National Theatre’s Directors’ Course cohort for 2025.
She is currently adapting her full length play BUMPS into a feature film, has an original TV project under commission by Fiorio Productions and is developing TheatreGoose’s second triptych of shows for production across 2026-7.
