Jim Hosking – Writer/Director
Jim Hosking is a British filmmaker whose work sits within a distinctive current of contemporary international cinema — one that blends heightened absurdity with emotional precision and rigorous visual control. His films construct meticulously designed worlds in which longing, masculinity and romantic fantasy are explored through stylised performance, tonal boldness and an unwavering commitment to sincerity beneath the comedy.
His debut feature, The Greasy Strangler, premiered in the Midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival in 2016, announcing a singular new voice in independent film. The film won the Discovery Award at the British Independent Film Awards and Best Comedy at the Empire Awards, before going on to achieve cult status internationally.
His second feature, An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn, starring Aubrey Plaza, Jemaine Clement, Emile Hirsch and Craig Robinson, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2018 and deepened his exploration of romantic delusion, performance of identity and the fragile architecture of male ego. The film was released by Universal Pictures in the US and Picturehouse in the UK.
Hosking co-created and directed the series Tropical Cop Tales, which premiered in the Indie Episodic section at the Sundance Film Festival before airing on Adult Swim. His latest feature, Ebony & Ivory, premiered at Fantastic Fest, continuing his examination of intimacy, fantasy and male self-mythology within tightly orchestrated cinematic spaces.
Across his body of work, Hosking has developed a reputation for films that are formally composed, tonally fearless and emotionally exacting — work that engages with the awkwardness and vulnerability of contemporary life while expanding the possibilities of cinematic comedy.
